A CHARACTER CAN BE CUT OUT - BUT STILL BE 'IN' THE SOAP

A character can be talked about - and talked about a lot - and still not make it to the microphone.
You can cut out a character, even though you have written script for them. You may have to remove the character because of casting demands, or economy.
Have other characters talk about them. Give their lines and action to other characters.
Your 'written-out' character can be heard 'down the line' on the phone. As the voice is distorted (treated), you can get away with it.
Your 'written-out' character can still be in dialogue, in a scene. But this character only grunts, or murmers or is eating noisily. It's a fun technique. It really works.
