Do your research!
Find out more about the play and the cultural context. Research and ask around. For example, if you are working with an American play - talk the script over with an American student. What is a 'loft apartment' in New York? What cultural background and religion are the characters? What is culturally specific to these situations and characters - WHAT DO YOU NOT KNOW?
YOU MUST READ THE WHOLE PLAY - do the hard work - read it three times at least (at the beginning) - and keep discovering more about it. Relate your acting choices and justifications to the character in the whole play, and the super-objective, obstacles etc. Note down your first reactions to the play and your character - these are so important.
