Challenging material
There may well be adult content and language in some of the play texts used in acting classes. Where art is involved, you leave your moral makeup must be left at the door. You trust to the course and the teacher. It is not for you to decide on the texts and material. What is approrpiate or inappropriate for an acting course? That is up to your teacher. It is not to be judged by your individual moral opinion.Your LEARNING CONTRACT is the with course and your teacher. A challenging acting course will deal with some exciting and significant plays. These texts deal sometimes with the most intimate experiences. Texts are chosen because they are significant and challenging for the actor. These plays should also be excellent representatives of plays past and present for the theatre. If you think this will be a problem you should see the teacher immediately. There needs to be a trusting and collaborative atmosphere, with respect for everybody - for every individual in the class - the only way to be creative.
EXAMPLES:
Patrick Marber, Closer - Act 1, Scene 6; Act 2 Scene 7
Ariel Dorfmann, Death and the Maiden - the interrogation and Paulina's experiences.
Although there are terrible experiences behind Eve Ensler, Necessary Targets. A Study of Women and War, there is not the sharpness of language.
What I advised:
This does not mean that you have to 'reveal all' in showing some text. You have a wide range of choice here.
You do not have to work on a text that you feel you cannot - because of the content.
There is not a rule that you have to - you can choose! - you do not have to take on the most challenging text (in this respect).
Just be aware of your duty to the whole class and your contract with the course.
